Data protection - key issues (GDPR)


This course sets out an overview of some of the more complex provisions of the Data Protection Act 1998 and the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations 2003 with particular emphasis on direct marketing and data subject access requests. It also explains how these areas will be affected by the General Data Protection Regulation and what steps need to be taken in the light of this.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this presentation, delegates will

  • understand the principles that apply to the making of data subject access requests and also how a data controller can respond to these requests in an effective and pragmatic way
  • have an awareness of recent cases dealing with the exemptions that relate to disclosure under a data subject access request
  • be familiar with the principles that apply to direct marketing with particular emphasis on the correct usage of opt-out and opt-in tick boxes
  • be able to describe how these issues will be affected by the General Data Protection Regulation and recognise what needs to be done about this
