Consumer Law - distance selling, doorstep selling and enhanced consumer rights

Overview

This course provides an overview of the Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013 which deal predominantly with the rules on distance selling and doorstep selling. There will also be a brief summary of enhanced rights given to consumers by the Consumer Protection (Amendment) Regulations 2014.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this presentation, delegates will

  • be able to understand the key provisions of the Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013
  • be familiar with the distance selling rules including the time periods for cancellation and refunds that apply as well as the rules concerning pre-ticked boxes and use of premium rate telephone help lines
  • understand the rules relating to doorstep selling including the cancellation rules and time periods
  • have an awareness of the key provisions of the Consumer Protection (Amendment) Regulations 2014
  • be familiar with the enhanced rights available to consumers by way of unwinding, refund and compensation

Keith Markham qualified as a Solicitor in 2001 and now works as a freelance presenter of training courses.

Initially working in private practice, in 2004 he moved in-house at the BGL Group, a major insurance intermediary that numbers Budget and comparethemarket.com among its brands. During his time there Keith advised on and conducted contract negotiations of a complex nature, often with major blue chip companies. He also advised extensively on data protection and consumer regulations as well as e-commerce and website related issues. 

Keith joined BPP in 2007 and worked as both an in-house lawyer dealing with commercial contracts and also as a presenter of training courses before ultimately deciding to specialise in delivering training and becoming a freelancer in 2009.

Drawing on his considerable experience Keith has designed and delivered a wide variety of training for BPP and other providers as well as for his own clients in the commercial law field. In particular he teaches topics relating to commercial contracts, data protection and e-commerce to lawyers and non-lawyers alike.
